The Lower St. Johns River is managed from this office. |
OVERVIEW
The field office in Deleon Springs is responsible for managing and enhancing the fisheries in the lower (northern) St. Johns River. This includes all areas north of Puzzle Lake.
The St. Johns River is approximately 260 miles long and drains nearly one-fourth of the state. Freshwater, estuarine and marine fishes all commingle in the lower end of the lake as it reaches its delta in Jacksonville. The river and its lakes are renowned for bass, bream, stripers, American shad and other sport fishes. Managing these resources requires a hands-on knowledge of the diversity of habitats encountered in the river and its oxbow lakes, the fishes themselves and the anglers that are using the river. This knowledge is used to protect and enhance the habitat, improve access and manage the resource for optimum-sustained use.
