OVERVIEW
The Panama City regional fisheries office is responsible for managing all of the fisheries in the northwest region of the state that are not specifically covered by a management team. Regional offices also have a primary role in serving as focal points for contact with the public, and as such provide advice on pond management, fish kills, fishing opportunities and so forth.
The Panama City office is responsible for numerous fish management areas and coordinates with the Commission-Managed Impoundment Program. They do most of the Commission's coordination work with the Northwest Florida Water Management District, as it pertains to fisheries.
Commission-Managed Impoundment Program
The Commission-Managed Impoundment Program is responsible for maintaining six Commission-managed impoundments. These reservoirs were constructed in the early 1970s to create still water fisheries with abundant bank access in areas where previously there had been little opportunity. They are maintained by an intensive management program involving stocking, aeration, liming, fertilizing and periodic drawdowns. Boat ramps, fishing piers or fingers, and bank access provides excellent fishing for both the casual and avid angler. This is a Federal Aid in Sportfish Restoration Project that benefits directly from the user-pays, user-benefits philosophy.
The project has prepared pamphlets for each of the Commission-Managed Impoundments, Sucker Fishing and Lake Seminole, which can be found on our fisheries publications/reports site. They also have a publication on Sucker Fishing Regulations (pdf version).
